Underground installation has a major aesthetic advantage over aerial: the cable is invisible and does not mar the surrounding landscape, though splices are generally stored above ground in a pedestal or vault. Underground cable is also invulnerable to high winds, freezing rain, and ice, but it can be damaged by severe flooding.
We can install underground cable in conduit, which adds protection but increases cost, or direct-bury it without conduit. Direct-bury cable is more rugged to withstand being buried in dirt and armored to prevent damage from sharp rocks or chewing rodents. Direct-buried cabling is often limited to ground that is primarily soil.
